What to do during a storm?

Learn how to avoid falling debris, broken glass, and downed power lines if you find yourself in a storm’s path. Stay tuned to local radio and NOAA weather stations for updates on the storm. If your area is under the threat of flooding or severe storms, seek refuge indoors and stay away from windows, skylights, and glass doors. Shelter is recommended for hurricane-force storms.

Avoiding flying debris

Avoid contact with flying debris or glass during a tropical storm or hurricane. This debris can cause serious injury and even fatalities. Flying debris can also be picked up by high winds. It is therefore important to stay indoors and keep windows closed. Lightning can also travel through plumbing systems. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid contact electrical wires and plumbing. You should not wash your dishes or hands during a hurricane. It can lead to electric shock.

Avoid breaking glass

If you live in a high-rise building, stay inside and stay away from windows and glass doors. Cover windows, lock exterior doors, and close all doors. If windows are inaccessible, take refuge in rooms with no windows, such as closets, and secure exterior doors. Cover windows with plywood and nail it to the frame if possible. Your pets should be kept indoors.

Avoid bringing down power lines

It is important to be cautious when you approach downed power lines to avoid electrocution. Although they may not seem like they are energized they can still be dangerous. In fact, a man in New Orleans was electrocuted last year after coming into contact with a downed power line. Another man in Florida was killed after coming in contact with a downed power line during Hurricane Laura.

Avoid evacuation

There are several dangers of not evacuating during a hurricane or tropical storm. Most public shelters lack beds or cots and are often under-equipped. Water and food can quickly run out. Avoid bringing alcohol or weapons to these shelters. Leaving your home to seek shelter can cause delays, since many stores and restaurants along hurricane routes are closed. Also, leaving the evacuation route can make traffic flow difficult.

Keeping yourself and family safe

If you do not have time to evacuate immediately, prepare a safe space or move to the middle your home, away from any windows and doors. Take shelter under heavy furniture if possible. Extreme storm damage can result in financial and emotional destruction to your home. Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Katrina caused combined damage of nearly $80 trillion. Although hurricane season typically runs from June 1 to November 30, severe storms can strike any time of the year.
